Charles Gray was born in Paisley, Scotland and is a law graduate of the University of Edinburgh. After brief stints as an actor, puppeteer, food service dogsbody and baby photographer, he became a national newspaper journalist, first in Glasgow and then London.

As a young man, he trained with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon and at the Old Vic, making his professional debut in 1952 in 'As You Like It.' Grey currently resides in Glasgow, which has an especially strong tradition of Scottish folk music. From there, he navigates his career, sporting one heck of a hand-me-down.
